Equipment

Ingredients

For the Waffles

Accompaniments

  • 2-3 mini croissants store-bought or homemade
  • 4-6 slices Swiss roll strawberry-vanilla works best
  • 4-6 heart-shaped sugar cookies (I used whole wheat sugar cookies)
  • 1 cup cream cheese softened
  • ½ cup Nutella or any type of chocolate spread
  • ½ cup red jam strawberry or raspberry
  • 1 cup strawberries hulled and halved
  • 1 cup blueberries
  • Optional toppings: powdered sugar, honey, pecans, edible roses, sugar flowers, heart jellies.

Instructions

Make the Waffles:

  • Preheat the heart-shaped waffle maker.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, sugar, and vanilla extract. Gradually add the flour, stirring until smooth. Add the butter and stir again.
  • Pour the batter into the preheated waffle maker and cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Assemble the Board:

  • Place the heart-shaped waffles on a large serving board.
  • Arrange the croissants around the waffles. Add the Swiss roll slices and the heart-shaped cookies.
  • Add small bowls of cream cheese, Nutella, and red jam to the board. Spread berries around the croissants and waffles.
  • Dust the waffles and croissants with powdered sugar and drizzle honey over the berries, and cream cheese. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use a large wooden board or platter with a bit of edge to keep things in place.
  • Group similar colors together for a pretty visual effect, then break them up with pops of contrasting fruit.
  • Layer items at different angles to make the board look full and inviting.
  • If you’re using spreads in bowls, add small spoons or butter knives so everything’s easy to serve.
  • Keep berries chilled and waffles warm until just before serving.
